Approximately 13000 new cases of lung cancer were diagnosed in 2018, with the disease accounting for more than 19% of all deaths from cancer. Despite being the most deadly cancer in Australia, lung cancer still remains poorly funded in comparison to the other big cancers. Thus, lung cancer remains one of the greatest oncological challenges of our time.
Please join us for CSM’s first seminar of 2019, where we have invited celebrated clinicians to outline the role of modern medical imaging, artificial intelligence and surgery in the current treatment of lung cancer.

Our panelists include:

  • Professor David Ball – As Director of the multi-disciplinary Lung Service at Peter Mac, Professor Ball is a specialist in thoracic malignancy, with over 30 years experience. He has published widely on lung cancer and is currently chief or co-investigator on a number of prospective trials of novel treatments for lung cancer. Professor Ball has published over 190 book chapters and papers in peer reviewed literature and is currently Chair of the Australian Lung Cancer Guidelines Working Party and a member of the Mesothelioma Guidelines Working Group. He is also Chair of Cancer Australia’s Lung Cancer Advisory Group and is a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer TNM staging committee. Professor Ball’s research interests include lung cancer staging, tumour imaging and definition, image guided radiotherapy, determinants of radiation response and combined modality therapy.
  • Dr Dishan Herath – As Joint Chief Medical Information Officer at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Director of Cancer Services at Western Health, Dr Dishan Herath is both a Medical oncologist and a Nuclear Physician. Dr Herath’s interests in the role of Artificial Intelligence in medicine led him to be the clinical lead for the VCCC’s evaluation of IBM’s Watson for Oncology software, used to improve clinical care. Dr Herath works at Western Health, Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn from clinicians continuing to push the medical frontiers and meet like-minded colleagues.

Catering will be provided.
